Garage Door Safety Checks for Rockford Homes
A residential garage door is the heaviest moving object in most houses, and the parts that keep it safe are the ones nobody looks at.
The balance test
With the door closed, pull the manual release, lift by hand to waist height and let go. A balanced door stays roughly where you left it. If it drops or shoots up, the springs are wrong and the opener has been carrying weight it should not.
The reversal test
Put a solid object - a length of timber, not your hand - under the door and close it. It must reverse on contact. If it does not, the force setting is wrong or the mechanism has failed. Worth repeating in March, because winter adjustments get forgotten.
The photo-eye test
Wave something through the beam as the door closes. It must reverse. In this city also check the eyes are still where they were before winter, because shovels and snowblowers move them constantly.
The cable check
Look at both cables where they meet the bottom bracket. In Rockford this is the single most important check on the door, because that is where salt slurry sits. Look for corrosion and pitting, not just fraying.
Where it stops
Anything under spring tension: springs, cables, bottom brackets and re-railing an off-track door. Those hold enough stored energy to injure seriously, and there is no partial version of that job.
