The failure order here
Cables and the bottom of the track go first, corroded by salt slurry dripping off the car. Roller bearings follow for the same reason. Why the salt matters more than the cold
People assume the cold is the enemy. The cold breaks springs, which is dramatic and obvious. The salt destroys cables, which is quiet, invisible and considerably more dangerous, because a corroded cable parts without warning instead of fraying where you can see it.
Why the floor moves
The northern Illinois frost line runs deep enough to lift a slab or apron in winter and settle it again in spring. If your door binds every February and is fine by April, nothing is broken - the concrete moved and the opener has not been told.
The one test worth learning
Pull the manual release with the door closed, lift by hand to waist height and let go. A balanced door stays roughly put. If it drops or shoots up, the springs are wrong and the opener has been carrying weight it should not.
What is genuinely a homeowner job
Rinsing salt off the bottom of the tracks during a thaw, clearing snow back from the door rather than up to it, checking the photo-eyes after every clear-out, lubrication with a cold-rated product, and weather seal replacement.
What is not
Anything under spring tension: springs, cables, bottom brackets, and re-railing a door that has come off its track.
