Operating a Garage Door Through a Rockford Winter

Before the first freeze

Clear the bottom track completely. Anything left in there - leaf litter, grit, a stray screw - is locked in ice by January and grinding against rollers until April. Replace a seal that no longer springs back, because a hardened seal bonds hardest to the slab.

Where you park

If the garage depth allows it, park a foot or two further back than habit. That moves the drip zone off the strip of slab where the tracks and cable terminations sit. It is a free change and it measurably extends hardware life.

Clearing snow

Clear back from the door, never up against it. A ridge of wet snow pressed against the bottom section holds meltwater and salt against the steel for weeks and refreezes into the seal line every night.

After every clear-out

Look at both photo-eyes. They sit at exactly shovel and snowblower height, and knocking one a few degrees out is the single most common cause of a door that will not close in this city.

When it freezes down

Break the bond along the seal with warm water and a plastic scraper before touching the opener. Here the bond can last days rather than clearing by mid-morning, so this is a real procedure rather than a formality.
