Garage door cable and roller repair in Rockford

Cables here tend to fail in the coldest weeks, when a door that's frozen at one corner gets pulled up anyway. The loose side jumps its drum, and the door hangs. Leave it where it is, unplug the opener, and call. The estimate is free.

Frozen at one corner

On a subzero morning the bottom seal freezes to the slab, and it rarely lets go evenly. The opener starts pulling, one corner breaks free while the other is still stuck, and for a second the cable on the stuck side has no load on it. That's all it takes for the cable to lift out of its groove and wrap around the end of the shaft. When the stuck corner finally gives, the door lurches up crooked and stops. When the hit bent a section and not just the hardware, see garage door panel replacement.

Along with the new cables, the bottom seal usually gets replaced on these calls, because a split or flattened seal is what holds water against the slab to freeze in the first place.

After an insulated door upgrade

A lot of east-side two-car doors have been swapped for insulated ones over the years, and an insulated door weighs noticeably more than the thin steel one it replaced. If the springs and cables weren't changed to match, the cables have been carrying more than they were sized for, and they fray early at the bottom corners.

When that's the case, the cables, the drums and the springs are sized to the door as it is now, not as it was, and each is listed on its own line.

Alley garages in the old core

Detached garages along the alleys in the older neighborhoods sit on slabs that drain toward the door, have no heat, and often have a single door that has been on the same hardware for decades. Their rollers stiffen in the cold until they drag rather than roll, and a dragging roller puts a sideways load on the cable at every stop.

A new set of sealed rollers and a pair of galvanized cables is the usual repair. It makes a hard-to-move door easy again, which is often the first thing people notice. Keeping the alley side of the door clear of plowed snow helps these garages as much as any part does.

What the cable visit looks like

Five steps, with the spring tension handled first.

  1. Door blockedClamped so it stays put, and the opener unplugged.
  2. Springs unwoundThe load comes off the shaft before anyone unhooks a cable.
  3. New pair installedA matched pair for this door's weight, with new drums or bottom brackets wherever the old ones are worn or rusted.
  4. Rollers and sealStiff rollers changed as a set; a new bottom seal when the old one is split.
  5. Level and testedDoor set level, springs rewound, balance checked by hand, then a full run and a reverse test with something set under the door.

Summer storms leave their mark too

A limb that glances off a door in a July storm can dent the bottom section just enough to knock a roller out of line. The door keeps working for a while, but that roller now rubs, the cable on that side works harder, and the damage shows up months later as a frayed cable.

If a storm has hit the door, even lightly, it's worth a look before winter. A bent roller stem is a small fix; a cable that parts in January isn't.

Cable rules we keep

Pairs only. A fresh cable next to a worn one never winds the same.

Load off before hands on. Every time, before a cable is touched.

Sized to the door as it is now. Especially after an insulated upgrade.

The cause fixed too. A frozen seal or a bent roller, not only the cable.

Both doors looked at. On a two-door garage, the other door's cables are checked while we're there.

Questions we get asked

On a cold morning the door went up crooked and stopped.

A cable likely jumped its drum while one corner was frozen down. Leave it, unplug the opener, and call; in most cases it's a same-visit repair.

Do I need new cables if I put in a heavier door?

If the springs and cables weren't changed with it, very likely. They're sized to the door's current weight on the visit.

Can you fix a bottom seal that keeps freezing?

A split or flattened seal is replaced, which stops water pooling under the door and freezing there.

My detached garage door is hard to lift.

Usually stiff rollers or springs that have lost tension. Both are looked at, and the door is balanced before we leave.

Can you fix the cables on a shop door?

Yes. Sectional doors on shops and small commercial buildings are done the same way, with heavier parts where the door needs them.

Why does one cable look frayed and the other fine?

One side has usually been working harder: a roller dragging on that side, a dent in that corner, or water pooling there. Both are replaced, and the reason is found.

How soon can someone come?

You get a real time window when you call, and a heads-up from the technician before arrival.

Is the estimate free?

It is, and you'll see every line of it before the work starts.

Getting a time slot

Tell us what the door is doing and where, and you get a two-hour window and a call when the technician is on the way. Cold-morning calls with a car stuck inside go first.
